I Asked Chat GPT and they said ..

This is happening more and more in the therapy room … people going to their preferred AI system and asking them to confirm their thoughts and feelings or asking them to advise on what someone has said or what they should say back …

Now honestly, I am late to the party – I’ve only really started using AI in recent months – and mainly to help with creative things likes, forms, social media posts, ideas for topics … Like the picture on this blog 😊 …

And it seems a great resource but honestly, I needed to get some research done to understand how it works when you are asking it to have an opinion or give a viewpoint – and that leaves me feeling concerned how much people are relying on technology to work through human challenges.

Here’s some of the things people are asking their AI:

  • Can you look at these messages and tell me if they are being sarcastic or controlling?
  • Can you go through these behaviours and tell me if they are having an affair?
  • Do you think they are gas lighting me?
  • -Based on what my partner is saying do you think I should leave this relationship?

(We have also had first cases of people thinking they are in a relationship with their AI system but that’s for another blog I think altogether!

So, let’s break this down … firstly AI is based on what it has learned by those that have input and used it. Whilst it can review lots of data and look to make conclusions it doesn’t use all the nuances that humans use.

I’ve also learned that your Ai system looks to give you the answer that best suits so if you are asking if you think there is an affair or that someone is being controlling it could define this as being an optimum answer and look for data to validate this for you … now humans do this – they like to be right and we start to search for information that backs up our beliefs … but we also have opposing thoughts… your AI unless asked the right questions will not and even then may still focus on one line of enquiry. (just back to that ‘ having a relationship with AI ‘ – how convenient if you are in a relationship with something that simply wants to please you ? ! )

It doesn’t have an in-depth knowledge of your relationship, and it doesn’t have full understanding of the relationship blueprint your subconscious has spent years drafting or that of your partner.

I can see why people go to it – we want answers and we want to know what’s going on and we want to have our thoughts validated … but that isn’t what we base relationships on … and it isn’t what therapists do.

In the therapy space we look to understand the interactions, to get to know the history, to ask questions to you about why you see things the way you do … to help you find space to explore different perspectives … we are not there to answer a question, make a decision for you or diagnose a behaviour. We are there to empower you to find emotional clarity and make decisions based on your own views.

Overall, I think AI can be used for amazing things, and it is great fun… I know some people have even named their AI and personally I find myself saying please and thank you when asking for things but if you ask me is AI the answer to your relationship challenges, I will say no … nothing beats human interaction and the seeking to understand one another and connect at a human level.
